Background:

Twyning Primary is situated in the residential village of Twyning. The majority of pupils live in the village, although some travel from nearby areas. The size of the village is increasing and this is likely to put pressure on numbers in the school, which is already slightly over-subscribed. The school hopes that a redevelopment plan in 2000 will provide extra space to deal with this. There are also plans to refurnish the library and carry out landscaping work outdoors. All pupils over the age of five have the opportunity to learn swimming. This is seen as an important skill because of the school's proximity to the nearby river. Year 6 children have two short French language sessions each week, designed as a fun introduction to French speaking and good pronunciation. Children can participate in football, athletics and cross-country running. These sports also provide an opportunity for parents to contribute in the school and for friendly meetings with other schools. Parents and others in the community also provide valuable support with reading, swimming, country dancing and the termly book fair. Twyning aims to 'develop the school as a caring community and to create a happy and stimulating school environment'.
