Background:
St James' Primary School was opened in 1865 in Great Norwood Street. It was, in fact, "three schools in one" - a boys' school, a girls' school and an infants' school, all in one building. The present school caters for approximately 305 pupils from four to 11 years old. The classrooms and work areas are well equipped and the staff are dedicated, enthusiastic and highly experienced. St James' has a happy, family atmosphere and high standards are expected both in terms of work and behaviour. The school is a Church of England voluntary controlled primary school. The building is situated in the Park area of Cheltenham on a site occupied by three other schools including Cheltenham Bournside comprehensive and sixth form centre to which most of the children transfer at 11 years old. The modern building contains 10 permanent classrooms and one Elliott classroom, two large activity areas, hall, kitchen, toilets and cloakrooms. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered at lunchtime and after-school.
