Background:

Situated in a small town on the edge of the Forest of Dean, the school occupies an 'attractive, red brick' building dating from 1915, set in spacious green surroundings and offering excellent views across the river Severn. Children are creating an environmental area in small woodland behind the school and developing an orchard alongside. The school offers 'a broad curriculum with a focus on creativity and the arts' and regularly works with local artists to produce murals and sculptures. It holds arts weeks during which musicians, authors and poets lead workshops with the children. Fifty-four children currently play instruments and the school performs three productions each year. It takes part in local sports challenges and after-school clubs are offered in sports, physical theatre, environment and music, while the school council works to maintain the 'positive school ethos'. Children have the opportunity to take part in two residential trips, one abroad. Pupils with special educational needs (SEN) have access to an SEN co-ordinator, a part-time teacher, several LSWs, an opportunities centre and a 'well-resourced SEN room. The over-subscribed school maintains links with a school in Kenya and also has 'strong links' with the church and local community. Children requiring after-school care are taken by minibus to a 'Kids Club' at the local comprehensive school.
