Background:
Founded in 1666 as the Blue Coat Hospital, it became a grammar school in 1944, with support from United Charities. The school moved from old city-centre buildings in 1964 to purpose-built buildings. The school has undergone a substantial expansion progamme, with a £1.25 million building plan completed in 1996. New buildings include an indoor pool, library, music centre, sports hall, fitness suite, and language centre. The school has a wide-range of extra-curricular activities including chess, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, explorer scouts, ballroom dancing, drama, music and debating. Combined specialist language college and science college status. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 6pm. Over-subscribed, with nearly three applications per place. Beacon status (1998); Sportsmark Gold (2004); DfES achievement award (2003). Ethos: 'Calm but purposeful atmosphere in which a well-rounded education is provided'.
