Background:
Picklechurch is a large village situated about 10 miles to the northeast of Bristol in open countryside; Bath is about the same distance away. The original village school was built in 1886; the new school is the only one in the village. Most facilities are modern and there are large attractive grounds, which have been transformed during the last five years. Every child planted an acorn for the millenium in 1996 and several saplings were transplanted in the grounds in autumn 1999. Extra-curricular activities for junior children are organised by all members of the teaching staff, including the headteacher. Clubs include football, netball, rounders, technology, recorders, drama, dance, book club, conservation, art, French, craft, cooking, computers, athletics and outdoor club (youth hostelling and day walks). Professional sports coaches are also employed to work with the children in football, cricket (Somerset Cricket Club), gymnastics (City of Bath Gym Club) and pop lacrosse. An annual residential activity week is organised for children in Year 6 at an activity centre in Somerset. The focus of the residential week is on team building. The school has a strong musical tradition; approximately 40 children each year play the violin, cello, cornet, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and flute. Singing is popular and the choir was one of only four South Gloucestershire music groups to reach the qualifying round of the Voices of Promise Millenium Song Competition. The school'sponsors a child in Kenya through Action Aid. The children support at least one charity per term, recent donations have been made to the British Heart Foundation, Children in Need, NSPCC, a hurricane appeal, Comic Relief and CLIC. The school aims to provide an environment that is open and secure to encourage honesty, tolerance, independence, celebration and responsibility.
