Background:
Set in a rural area near Gloucester, Norton Junior was founded in the 1870s. Since then it has since seen 'numerous' extensions to its accommodation including new buildings which were opened by the Bishop of Gloucester in 1987. As a church school, Norton has regular contact with the local vicar and attends the church for services and religious education. Community links have also been developed with play groups, farms and businesses in the area and the school benefits from an 'active' Friends Association. Pupils may take extra-curricular netball, football, athletics, rounders, art, chess or learn to play a musical instrument. The school has participated in the Tewkesbury schools swimming gala, athletics competitions and the annual Cheltenham Dance Festival. The juniors were joint regional winners of the Daily Telegraph schools newspaper competition in 1998 and won the chance to have 22 poems published in a national anthology. In 1999, pupils took part in the Children's Parliament on the environment and they have also competed in the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust schools nature quiz. The school raises money for charities such as the NSPCC, British Heart Foundation and a local homeless shelter, and gave harvest funds to an appeal for Bosnia.
