Background:

Founded in 1904 and moved to its current location in 1911. In 1964, the school amalgamated with the Girls' Central School, which had been founded in 1926. There is a co-educational, joint sixth form with Marling School, a neighbouring boys' school, with more than 550 students. Subjects are strong across the whole curriculum. The school has a wide range of extra-curricular activities, particularly in sport and music. Various students play in representative orchestras and competitions; some have appeared on radio and television; regular concerts in newly-built music centre. Charity fundraising is a major focus of the school, with more than £20,000 raised; Giving Nations Award (2005). Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Schools Curriculum Award (2002); Investor in People status (2003, 2006); DfES achievement award (2003). Ethos 'The school places great emphasis on personal development as well as academic achievement.
