Background:
Founded in 1904 and moved to its current location in 1911. In 1964, the school amalgamated with the Girls' Central School, which had been founded in 1926. There is a co-educational, joint sixth form with Marling School, a neighbouring boys' school, with more than 550 students. Subjects are strong across the whole curriculum. The school has a wide range of extra-curricular activities, particularly in sport and music. Various students play in representative orchestras and competitions; some have appeared on radio and television; regular concerts in newly-built music centre. Charity fundraising is a major focus of the school, with more than £20,000 raised; Giving Nations Award (2005). Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Schools Curriculum Award (2002); Investor in People status (2003, 2006); DfES achievement award (2003). Ethos 'The school places great emphasis on personal development as well as academic achievement. The ethos is one of valuing every individual and celebrating achievement in an inclusive and open environment'.
