Background:
Berkeley Primary School was originally housed in what is now the Old School House restaurant and Hotel adjacent to Berkeley Castle. The school moved to its present site in 1964, which was originally the site of the local secondary school, built in 1910. Following concerted campaigning by the staff and governors, Gloucestershire County Council agreed to the construction of three new purpose-built classrooms adjoining the hall, together with the conversion of the old kitchen into infant library. This work has been followed by an extensive internal refurbishment of the main block, which has seen the classrooms being completely renovated, and the creation of a purpose-built computer room. In 2004 a further extension of the building is being undertaken to establish a small room for withdrawal group teaching and toilets to facilitate community use of the hall. The original domestic science building has been extensively refurbished to accommodate the Berkeley playgroup with which the school has very close links. The school has extensive grounds including a playing field, swimming pool, pond and wood. This is a happy school at the heart of the community where learning for all is promoted.
