Background:
Opened in 1900, the schol is set in 'a most pleasant setting in a caring community'. It has a 'long history and tradition of academic excellence'. There are nine classrooms, a 'well resourced' music centre, a food activities room, craft activities area, a kiln room and a medical room. The reading centre is 'attractive' and the library 'well stocked'. What was once the original school is now the assembly hall and contains a stage and 'modern' lighting equipment. It is used for daily assemblies, physical education, dance and drama. There is an 'excellent' range of audio-visual aids, and 'at least one' computer centre in each classroom. The Parent-Teacher's Association has helped in attaining extra resources. Almondsbury's grounds 'extend over two acres' and include playing fields, two separate playgrounds for infants and juniors and a conservation area developed by the children. There is also a heated, open air swimming pool (not used all year round) and sports changing rooms. The school's music tradition is 'well known' and concerts 'receive a large demand for tickets'. The school's music centre holds violin, cello, guitar and trumpet lessons to name a few. The string orchestra rehearses every week and there are two choirs. The school's links with the community involve the church, parish council, village senior citizen club, Mother's Union, local forge and many others. Netball and crickets successes include being runners-up in the local tournament, and the soccer team won the Severnside 11-a-side Cup Competition in 1999. Two Year 6 pupils were the winner and runner-up in the first Thornbury Rotary Youth Speaks 1999 Competition for Primary Schools. Various charities are supported throughout the year including Blue Peter Appeals, Jack and Jill Appeal (Southmead Hospital) and the Wallace and Grommit Appeal (New Bristol Children's Hospital). The school is currently over-subscribed.
